About The Provider
Louis R. Barfield, MD, earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his residency in general surgery at Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans and his fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at LSU Health Schumpert Campus in Shreveport, La. In addition, he also completed a laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery preceptorship with Colon and Rectal specialists in Richmond, Va. He is Board Certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery, but solely practices colon and rectal surgery. Additionally, Dr. Barfield is an associate professor of surgery at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Dr. Barfield is involved nationally, serving on American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons committees and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons Colorectal Committee. Dr. Barfield specializes in minimally invasive colorectal resections for inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis and colorectal polyps or cancer. He also performs advanced minimally invasive trans-anal techniques including Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery and Trans-anal Endoscopic Microsurgery. Along with his partners, he focuses on quality exemplified by the development of their Enhance Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol, the first in the Baton Rouge area, allowing for shorter length of stay and improved pain control, while preserving low readmission rates. Together, they provide top colorectal cancer care using a multidisciplinary team approach, always looking for measures to enhance quality of care. Becoming a physician and specializing in colorectal surgery was the most direct way for Dr. Barfield to marry his passions for science and interacting with others, especially in their times of need. He enjoys developing long-standing relationships with all his patients, particularly his cancer patients.
