About The Provider
Omar Leonards, MD, is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine. He served as Chief Cardiology Fellow at LSU Health in New Orleans and completed a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Tulane University Health Sciences Center, where he focuses on advanced interventional techniques and the intersection of clinical care with health policy and systems leadership.
Dr. Leonards has a long-standing commitment to emergency response and public health in Louisiana. From 2012 to 2019, he served as a volunteer firefighter and first responder in Calcasieu Parish, gaining valuable frontline experience in prehospital emergency care, disaster response and community safety. Notably, during his tenure in the fire service, he was awarded the Acadian Ambulance's Meritorious Service Award for his service to the citizens of rural Calcasieu Parish.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Leonards worked alongside the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the Louisiana Department of Health, helping open medical monitoring stations that served as alternative care sites across the state. In 2025, he was appointed to the Governing Board of the Louisiana Emergency Response Network, and his leadership extends to the Louisiana State Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the American College of Cardiology. A dedicated researcher and policy advocate, he has published his work in peer-reviewed journals and presented findings at national conferences. He collaborated with NASA to help develop return-to-duty guidelines, serves as an Editorial Fellow for the American College of Cardiology and completed a health policy fellowship on Capitol Hill, where he focused on expanding healthcare access for veterans through the Veterans' Community Care Program.
Dr. Leonards proudly hails from rural southwestern Louisiana and completed his entire educational journey within his home state. His deep commitment to Louisiana’s communities, combined with his diverse experience spanning emergency response, clinical cardiology, and healthcare policy, drives his mission to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes for all Louisianans.
